Microsoft Research’s SearchTogether

Posted by Martin on November 25th, 2008

Microsoft’s R&D has come up with an interesting concept of collaborative searching (research.microsoft.com/searchtogether). Even though I don’t see it as especially practical in my day-to-day searches, both private and professional, it could be very userful in an academic environment. During my studies I’ve often had to collaborate on case studies or presentations with fellow students, and a collaborative search like this could have helped considerably.

Since I’m an Apple guy, and SearchTogether requires IE7, I haven’t tested it. But if you give it a try, tell me what you think.

BMW “GINA” Concept Car

Posted by Martin on June 11th, 2008

Take a look at this BMW car skin concept. Not sure about the security implications (just imagine what a knife could do to that cloth), but it certainly looks interesting. Especially the hidden lights and the way the hood opens up!

Nokia Sports Tracker

Posted by Martin on May 12th, 2008

I’ve just tested Nokia Sports Tracker (sportstracker.nokia.com) with my new Nokia N82. Using its internal GPS receiver, it recorded my bike tour which, after uploading the data to the Nokia Sports Tracker website, is shown in a nice Google Map, along with max/min/average speed, distance, altitude, etc. A really nifty application of handheld GPS.

Apollo image recognition: the eye-Phone

Posted by Martin on April 13th, 2008

Now that is a novel idea how to combine technologies to create a product that’s much more than the sum of its parts, a technology mashup if you will: the eye-Phone (okay, they still need to work on the name). Combining GPS, image recoginition, and the Internet, Ernst Pechtl and Hans Geiger of SuperWise Technologies AG, Germany, created software that allows you to point the camera of your GPS-enabled mobile phone at any landmark and ask for information on it. Is this the future of tourist information systems?
