Last night, a female undergraduate student was raped here in Hull while returning home from a night out at 4 am in the morning. She didn’t know the attacker, and police are doing their best to catch him fast. Is it really getting back to how bad it was in my first year here?
In my first two semesters at Hull University, somebody stole my underwear out of my room at night (through an open window), a tire of my car was sliced, and about six other international students I knew got their laptop computers stolen. There were also the odd stories of murder, serious bar brawls, or other violent attacks. What is wrong with this place? Is Britain’s scum really that heavily concentrated here? Surely, it can’t be that bad everywhere in this country?
I mean, we do have crime in Austria, and just today a report said that it has risen in 2004, but we’re still very far from this city. It is only after having experienced the feelings of insecurity and uncertainty here that I realise what a safe country Austria really is… or at least my parts.
My three female housmates are, of course, very concerned. We all exchanged phone numbers, not only for emergencies, but also if someone wants go home late and is alone and would like company. Police have put out a serious warning for our area. Especially girls shouldn’t go out alone at night. Jesus, were are we? It’s sad, it’s disturbing, it’s maddening. Scum of the earth…
